We wish to announce that a prize-giving ceremony, organized by the Chairperson of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection in collaboration with the Competition Law Association, for the best masters’ theses devoted to competition and consumer protection took place on March 28, 2018.

The Awarding Committee presented the Association’s award to Ms. Kamila Gąsior of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Toruń for her thesis: “Retail sales tax and state aid for entrepreneurs” which she wrote under the guidance of UMK Prof. Agnieszka Olesińska. The Committee Members appreciated the topicality of the thesis, the critical approach to the subject, the skillful and reliable use of sources, and the professional editorship of the thesis.

In the competition for the best masters’ thesis devoted to competition protection, the Office Chairperson awarded prizes to:

1. Mr. Mateusz Czerniak of the Faculty of Law, Administration, and Economics at the University of Wrocław, for his thesis under the title: “Competition protection and intellectual property in the new technology markets”, written under the supervision of UWr Prof. Jerzy Jacyszyn (1st place);

2. Mr. Michał Maruszak of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw, for his thesis under the title: “Selected aspects of the essence of state aid in relation to regional aid”, written under the supervision of Dr. Cezary Banasiński (2nd place);

3. Mr. Andrzej Zinkiewicz of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the Łazarski University, for his thesis under the title: “Relationship between competition and copyright laws in the context of admissibility of antitrust control of a collective management organization”, written under the supervision of Lazarski University Prof. Małgorzata Sieradzka (3rd place).

In the competition for the best masters’ thesis devoted to consumer protection, the Office Chairperson awarded prizes to:

1. Ms. Joanna Kubiak of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź for her thesis under the title: “Legal regulation of mediation in consumer disputes”, written under the supervision UŁ Prof. Monika Namysłowska (2nd place);

2. Mr. Maciej Otmianowski of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw for his thesis under the title: “Homo Cognitivus vs. Homo Oeconomicus – the consumer’s model in the light of The Directive on Consumer Rights”, reviewed by Dr. Marcin Romanowicz (3rd place).

The Awarding Committee also presented two awards for theses regarding consumer protection, to:

1. Ms. Julia Fontańska of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź for her thesis under the title: “Consumer protection in the context of selected legal problems in the field of trading of dietary supplements”, written under the supervision of UŁ Prof. Monika Namysłowska; and

2. Mr. Maciej Borkowski of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków for his thesis under the title: “Non-conformity of goods with the contract after the amendment to the Civil Code by the Act on Consumer Rights of May 30, 2014.  De lege ferenda comments in respect of balancing the interests of the participants in consumer trading”, written under the supervision of Prof. Elżbieta Traple.
